Tommy's Necropsy
Pictures
WARNING -
This site includes photos of organs removed after death !

Tommy, a Blue Colourpoint Persian, was diagnosed with chronic
kidney failure as a result of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in October 1999.
He died on 22 March 2000 just 2 weeks before his 7th
birthday.
He came to us two years ago as a re-home (with pedigree).
We adored this wonderful character &
miss him terribly !

Sleep safely at peace dear Tommy
!
His weight at death, 7 lbs, was just his skeleton
plus a
little fat around his internal organs.
This was less than half his normal
body weight - he was a big boned
cat.
One of his kidneys has been donated to PKD research.
The photographs below show his two kidneys removed after death.
They were 5 times larger than normal.
One has been cut to show the internal state of the
kidneys.
His liver was found to have a few cysts as well. Tommy also
had cardiomyelitis.

The fluid released was inside the swollen
kidney.
Tommy's original ultrasound scan indicated that his kidneys were
peppered with cysts
like swiss cheese but only a necropsy can give the
true picture !
